CONNECTING THE DOTS TO ‘COURAGE’:

So, recently, I met up with some friends from high school.  It was the first time I’d seen them SINCE high school…just a short 2 years ago (insert laughter here).  Well all chatted for awhile catching up and I got a chance to catch up with a friend, John.  We’ve known each other since the 2nd grade.  Later, we connected on Facebook.  Then he suggested I check out the film, “COURAGE”.  I checked it out and that was it for me.

COURAGE”:  The poignant story of Sharon Browne and the tireless fight for her children’s lives and well being.

COURAGE” is the documentary which tells the poignant story of Sharon Browne and her strength in raising two children with the rare and fatal disorder, Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS). The film was started as a small school project and has since gained attention by affected families around the world. It is not a film of sorrow or misfortune but a film of hope and strength!

Muco-poly-what?

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) and related diseases are genetic lysosomal storage diseases (LSD) caused by the body’s inability to produce specific enzymes. Normally, the body uses enzymes to break down and recycle materials in cells. In individuals with MPS and related diseases, the missing or insufficient enzyme prevents the proper recycling process, resulting in the storage of materials in virtually every cell of the body. As a result, cells do not perform properly and may cause progressive damage throughout the body, including the heart, bones, joints, respiratory system and central nervous system. While the disease may not be apparent at birth, signs and symptoms develop with age as more cells become damaged by the accumulation of cell materials.

Chapman University student Jonathan Formica was inspired by this seventh grade history teacher’s joyous classroom presence, but it was her life that moved him to make his film COURAGE. Sharon Browne, a Seal Beach resident and a teacher at the Orange County High School of the Arts in Santa Ana, is the mother of two children with the rare, debilitating and deadly Sanfilippo Syndrome. As a senior in high school, Formica created a seven-minute documentary on his special teacher. That film was selected for the 2007 Newport Beach Film Festival.  It is now a 30-minute film and requests to expand this film are coming in from all over the world.  I love it!!!

Jonathan:  Young, brilliant, inspirational

Sharon:  Patient, powerful, courageous

Sharon’s 2 little angels:  Sweet, very special, miracles, 100% possibility
